Palma Mallorca Airport poised for expansion

palma de mallorcaThe picture perfect Postcard Island of Mallorca is the Mediterranean the way it was meant to be with white sandy beaches in hidden coves being lapped by crystal-clear water. If that was not enough the Serra de Tramuntana mountains provide an escape from the summer heat with their hiking trails and winding scenic roads that attract the world’s top cyclists to train during the mild winters. Throw in a chic capital city (Palma) that is steeped in history dating back to the Phoenicians and a cathedral that dominates the harbour and you have a unique holiday destination that will have you returning to Mallorca year after year. Most people’s first glimpse of Mallorca is the Aeroport de Son Sant Joan, known better as Mallorca airport, where you can avoid the hassle and start your holiday in style by pre-booking an airport taxi transfer to take you to your hotel or private accommodation. mallorca airportYou may be surprised to find out that Palma de Mallorca Airport is not only one of Europe’s busiest airports but Mallorca airport is actually the third largest in Spain with only Madrid and Barcelona handling more passengers per year. Poised for yet further growth as more people choose the Balearic Island of Mallorca for their summer holidays, Mallorca’s Aeroport de Son Sant Joan can currently handle 25 million visitors which equates to 12,000 passengers per hour. Currently, 80 airlines operate out of Mallorca ferrying passengers to 168 airports in 30 different countries and with new carriers entering the marketplace each year the forecast is for passenger numbers to pass the 27 million mark in 2017. With the increased number of visitors in mind, the air terminal governing body AENA has set aside 297€ million to upgrade the airport so that it can increase its current 66 flights per hour to 80. Priority will be given to expanding the current terminals that comprise one main building and four hubs, A, B, C and D to accommodate more passengers by adding additional bridges and corridors to eliminate the need to use buses in order to transport passengers between the terminal and the aircraft. Modernising the current luggage-handling system is also part of the master plan to take Palma de Mallorca Airport to the next level. Most of the expansion work will take place during the winter months so as not to hinder the busy summer season.
